The Sydney Morning Herald this week is reporting record numbers of travellers through Sydney and Melbourne airports led by Chinese visitors.
A record 27.7 million travellers, a 10 per cent increase on the previous year, passed through Melbourne Airport in 2010. International flights recorded a 14 per cent increase which was primarily attributed to a big jump in Chinese visitors as well as visiting English cricket fans. There was an additional 1.7 million domestic passengers over the year which is an increase of 9 per cent. Melbourne Airport is confident of continuing growth given the announcement of three additional Chinese Airlines commencing services in 2011.
Sydney Airport has also reported a significant increase in passenger numbers which Chinese tourists played a major role. There was a 7.8 per cent increase in passenger numbers for the year and the airport is reporting an average of 103,000 passengers a day. This equates to almost 38 million passengers a year.
Sydney Airport reported revenue of $943 million for a profit before interest and tax of $773 million. As a comparison Airservices Australia, the government owned provider of Air Traffic Control and associated services, reported for financial year 2009/10 total revenue of $806 million with a profit before interest and tax of $50.6 million.
