Port Macquarie, one of Australia's busiest airports without a control tower service, is about to get busier.  Air Traffic Control is provided by controllers based in Brisbane.

Virgin Airlines have announced ,pending regulatory approvals, a new daily return services between Brisbane and Port Maquarie from 19 October.  There will be a double daily return service from Sydney and Port Maquarie introduced from 19 October.  Both services will be operated by 68 seat ATR turboprop aircraft.  Virgin currently operate services between Sydney and Port Maquarie with  Embraer E170 jet aircraft. Qantas also provide a Sydney to Port Maquarie service. In 2010 200,000 passengers passed through Port Maquarie Airport.

Virgin will also inaugurate a double daily week day service between Brisbane and Gladstone also using ATR turboprop aircraft form 17 October.  These services will supplement current Qantaslink services to Gladstone from various Queensland cities.  In 2010 180,000 passengers passed through Gladstone Airport.
