Darwin International Airport has issued a revised development plan which will lead to a 55% increase in terminal floor area. The plan will provide more check-in desks and boarding gates to cater for a growth in passenger numbers. The planned terminal expansion is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013.

Darwin Airport is forecast by BITRE to have passenger numbers of 2.9 million by 2016.  The airport is viewed as a key economic driver for northern Australia with the expanded terminal to provide for growth on new and existing routes.

The terminal design is geared to the low-cost carrier model and will allow for the continued growth of the Jetstar hub as well as flexibility to accommodate new airline operators in the future.
