At the Avalon Airshow, the Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss announced that Thales Australia will be the contractor for the introduction of the next generation air traffic management system, also known as the OneSky project.

The OneSky system will bring both civil and military air traffic control together under one single platform.  Currently civil and military use different systems which have limited capacity to communicate with each other.  The OneSky project will jointly overseen by AirservicesAustralia, the civil Australian Air Traffic Control provider, and Department of Defence, who manage Air Traffic Control at defense facilities, including joint user airports.

The OneSky project is budgeted to cost $600 million and is expected introduced via a phased transition from 2018 to 2012.  OneSky will replace the current civilian system, The Australian Advanced Air Traffic System (TAAATS) which was developed and commissioned in the 1990s.
