The Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, has announced the signing of a bilateral air services agreement between Australia and the Lao People's Democratic Republic (DPR) that is expected to grow tourism, business and trade between the two nations.

While still a developing market, there has been a steady increase in passenger numbers travelling between Australia and Laos over the last decade, with passenger traffic between our two countries growing by an annual average of 12 per cent between 2004 and 2014.

Commercial arrangements in the air services agreement allow airlines of each side to operate up to seven weekly services to and from Australia's major gateway airports, along with unrestricted access to regional Australia, including Darwin, Cairns, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.

The agreement also removes all restrictions on the carriage of freight between Australia and Laos and provides for fully open code share arrangements for both countries.
